Webishop to discuss crucial skill sets needed to work effectively with Māori

With regions across the upper North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand recently experiencing widespread floods and devastation caused by heavy rainfall, we must raise awareness and urgency to make bold changes to how we work with people and the environment. 

The webishop, ‘Māori Health Promotion – Developing a prosperous workforce for whānau and whenua’ will feature a panel of health experts, who will discuss crucial skill sets needed to work effectively with Māori and examine the significance of shifting the workforce towards embedding an environmental health lens.

Our guest speakers are – Joseph Tyro, Sharon Shea and Diane Koti. 

Joseph is from Te Aka Whai Ora/Māori Health Authority ki Te Wai Pounamu. Joseph brings with him years of experience in serving the South Island and Canterbury District as Director of Māori Health, through his many governance positions, and also as a lecturer.

Sharon who is CEO for Shea Pita and Associates Ltd has had many achievements throughout her career. Most notably, she was awarded with the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2019, for services to Māori Health and Development. She was also the first Māori Board Chair of the Bay of Plenty DHB in 2021, and was a Board Member of Te Aka Whai Ora – Māori Health Authority, until stepping down recently.

Diane is the General Manager and Co -Lead Localities with Te Aka Whai Ora/Māori Health Authority and member of the Te Rau Ora Board of Directors. She is an experienced manager within Primary and Secondary health care, and has an educational and vocational background in community engagement, suicide prevention and Te Ao Māori to name a few.

The webishop will be facilitated by HPF's Māori Health Promotion Strategist, Mereana, Te Pere Waitaha, Tapuika, Ngāti Ranginui.

Registration costs for non-members:

HPF webishops have three phases of learning activities:

  1. Participants are encouraged to participate in the pre-event resources, exercises and material that will be disseminated before the webishop to study in preparation for the event. 
  2. Participation during the webishop with questions and answers as well as discussion.
  3. After the webishop, participants will receive a copy of the powerpoint presentation and other resources used. You will also be able to exclusively view the webishop on our YouTube channel for one week before going public. You can also ask follow-up questions to the presenter and/or facilitator during the week after the webishop.
