Workshop to explore future role of health promoters

We invite you to join us for our next online workshop, ‘Determinants and Inequities in Health in 2025 – where are we  going as Health Promoters and what differences can we make?’

At the workshop, on October 2 from 11am - 12.30pm, we’ll be looking at the range of determinants, health inequities, terminology, changes post-covid, system-thinking and more importantly what we as health promoters can and should be doing.

This is not just a presentation, you’ll take part in an interactive activity, and a short pre-workshop survey will help tailor the session to your interests and realities.

Megan Tunks, an experienced Public Health Thought Leader who has held a range of roles within health promotion, and public health, will deliver the workshop. 

Megan will be joined by guest speaker Mapihi Raharuhi (for one part of the workshop) who has a range of experience in System thinking, Māori & Community development to share her insights.

HPF webishops have three phases of learning activities:

  • Participants are encouraged to participate in the pre-eventresources, exercises and material that will be disseminated before the webishop to study in preparation for the event. 
  • Participation during the webishop with questions and answers as well as discussion.
  • After the webishop, participants will receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation and other resources used. You will also be able to exclusively view the webishop on our YouTube channel for one week before going public. You can also ask follow-up questions to the presenter and/or facilitator during the week after the webishop.

About the presenter:

Megan Tunks, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, Whakatōhea, experienced Public Health Thought Leader 

This workshop is being delivered by Megan Tunks, an experienced Public Health Thought Leader who has held a range of leadership roles within Health Promotion, and Public Health, including former CEO at Toi Tangata. More recently, Megan was the Chief Advisor Health Promotion in the National Public Health Service in 2023 and 2024.

She holds a number of educational qualifications including a Masters of Applied Practice (Technological Futures) from Unitec & Tech Futures Lab, a Masters of Philosophy (Māori Health Education) with First Class Honours, a Diploma in Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Arts (Māori Studies).

Guest Speaker:

Mapihi Raharuhi, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Mākino, Ngāti Kea, Ngāti Tuara, Ngāti Waiora 

Megan will be joined by Mapihi Raharuhi, who is experienced in system thinking, Māori & Community development, to share her insights. Mapihi was the former Director of Equity and Outcomes at Lakes DHB and the former Manager of Healthy Families Rotorua. Mapihi is a distinguished leader, academic, and advocate whose work reflects an unwavering commitment to advancing Māori health and wellbeing through cultural and genealogical frameworks.

In 2022, she earned a Masters of Māori and Indigenous Leadership from the University of Canterbury and is now pursuing a PhD at Auckland University of Technology. Her doctoral research explores how Te Arawa whakapapa can serve as a powerful tool to achieve equity for Māori accessing health services.
