New online course explores how Te Tiriti underpins equitable health outcomes

We’re pleased to announce the launch of our new online course: A Treaty Understanding of Hauora in Aotearoa-New  Zealand (TUHA-NZ) (Level 2).

Developed to support health promotion practitioners, this course explores how Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins equitable health outcomes in Aotearoa.

Grounded in both Te Tiriti and the Ottawa Charter, TUHA-NZ provides a practical framework to apply Treaty principles in everyday health promotion practice.

The TUHA-NZ framework emerged through consultation with the health promotion workforce in the 1990s, who identified the need for a Treaty-based guide to complement the Ottawa Charter. The framework addresses key challenges in reducing health disparities and supporting Māori health aspirations.

This online course is a self-directed learning version of TU-HANZ.  It is a shorter version of the original two-day course, which was designed to be taught in person, and has been offered for more than two decades. With the technological advancements, and the growth of online learning, we adjusted the course to this online version, so that it can be accessed by more learners across the country and beyond.

The course is self-directed through the online experience platform iQualify, which is user-friendly and has a wealth of technical support available to help you learn to navigate your way around or to resolve any issues.

While not accredited, the course is matched to the NZQA framework and is aligned to our Certificate of Achievement in Introducing Health Promotion.
